"The Devil Walks by my Side" partly refers to Robert Johnson, guitarist reputed to have signed a pact with the devil, but also to several films, such as "Sexy Devil", "Crossroads", or even Goethe's Faust and the French film that is based on it, "la beauté du diable" (the beauty of the devil). A government report on Satanism is also among the references used. Mephisto's theme from Franz Liszt's Faust Symphony is briefly repeated in this song.
